Fold to 4-Bet from BTN

The frequency with which a player, as the 3-bet initiator on the button BTN, chooses to fold when facing a 4-bet from an opponent.

Overview

Fold to 4-Bet from BTN (Button Fold to 4-Bet) is a common HUD (Heads-Up Display) statistic used in online Texas Hold'em to measure a player's preflop aggression and adjustment tendencies from the button. This statistic is typically presented as a percentage, reflecting how often a specific player folds to a 4-bet after having made a 3-bet from the button.

Calculation

The formula for this statistic is: Number of folds to a 4-bet / Total number of times facing a 4-bet × 100%. It is important to note that this statistic only applies to the player's actions from the button and only counts instances where the player has previously made a 3-bet. If the player merely limps or raises without 3-betting from the button, this statistic is not triggered.

Strategic Significance

  • Low values (e.g., below 30%): Indicate that the player rarely folds to a 4-bet after 3-betting from the button, typically holding a strong range (e.g., QQ+, AK) and preferring to call or shove. This may suggest the player is willing to engage in deeper stacks and has a good read on opponent 4-bet bluffs.
  • High values (e.g., above 60%): Indicate that the player frequently folds to a 4-bet after 3-betting from the button, meaning their 3-bet range contains many bluffs or weak hands (e.g., small to medium pairs, suited connectors) and they have weak resistance to 4-bets. Such players can be easily exploited—opponents can frequently use 4-bet bluffs to force folds.
  • Medium values: Typically indicate a balanced strategy, where the player both calls or re-raises with strong hands and folds with some hands.

Limitations & Considerations

  • This statistic is affected by sample size: if the sample is small, the value may not be statistically significant. It is recommended to observe at least 50-100 samples before drawing conclusions.
  • Position specificity: The data only applies to the button and cannot represent the player's responses in other positions (e.g., CO, SB).
  • Opponent tendencies: In actual play, adjustments must be made based on opponent style. For example, against a tight-aggressive player, their 4-bet range is strong, so even a high fold percentage may be reasonable.
  • Stack depth: With shallow stacks, players may be more inclined to call or shove with a wider range, leading to lower fold percentages.

Application Example

Suppose an opponent has a Fold to 4-Bet from BTN of 70% (sufficient sample) and a wide preflop 3-bet range. Then when you hold a medium-strength hand (e.g., AJo, KQo) from a blind position, you can more frequently 4-bet bluff (mixing value and bluffs) to likely force a fold. Conversely, if the opponent's stat is 20%, you should reduce your 4-bet bluffs against them, as they are more likely to hold strong hands.
