HJ 150bb Resteal
HJ 150bb Resteal
Term: HJ Deep Stack Resteal HJ 150bb Resteal A restealing strategy used by a player in the Hijack HJ position holding a deep stack of approximately 150 big blinds, aimed at countering a steal attempt from a later position.
Overview
Restealing is a move where a player in the blind or early position re-raises a steal raise from a late-position player (e.g., button, small blind) to take down the pot. HJ (Hijack) is the second seat to the right of the button, a middle-late position. When the HJ effective stack is around 150bb, it falls into deep stack territory, requiring more cautious consideration of pot odds, opponent ranges, and potential profitability in restealing.
Strategic Principles
- Opponent Range: Late-position stealers typically raise with a wide range, and with deeper stacks, their stealing frequency may increase. The HJ's re-raise should target their likely weak hands, such as small pairs, suited connectors, etc.
- Pot Control: At 150bb depth, the 3-bet size is usually 3-4 times the steal raise, leaving a significant remaining stack. If 4-bet, assess whether to continue; if called, proceed cautiously post-flop to avoid falling into a large pot trap.
- Range Selection: Generally, use medium-strong holdings like AQ+, TT+, or mix in a few speculative hands (e.g., AXs, connectors) depending on opponent frequency to balance the range.
Notes
- Position Disadvantage: HJ is in worse position post-flop than late-position players (button/small blind). If the resteal does not end the action, you must play from a disadvantage. Therefore, avoid restealing with marginal hands in deep stacks.
- Opponent Tendencies: If the opponent steals frequently and folds easily post-flop, increase resteal frequency; if they are solid, tighten your range.
- Stack Depth: 150bb is medium-deep. After a resteal is called, the pot is relatively small compared to stacks, allowing for range-based c-betting post-flop. However, avoid overcommitting with marginal hands in large pots.
Typical Example
Assume blinds 10/20, HJ effective stack 3000 (150bb). Button raises to 60. HJ holds ATs and could consider a re-raise to about 200-240. If button folds, HJ wins the pot; if called, HJ proceeds based on board texture and opponent actions.
