In no-limit hold'em, the Hijack (HJ) is the seat two to the right of the button. With 25 big blinds (bb), a stack depth often seen in tournament poker, the HJ player must carefully choose between folding, calling, or raising against an open raise from earlier positions. This scenario is known as "HJ 25bb Defense" because the HJ is defending against aggression while having a moderately short stack.

Stack Depth Dynamics

25bb is a critical depth. It is shallow enough that post-flop play is awkward for many hands, but deep enough that all-in preflop isn't always mandatory. The HJ must balance protection of chips with opportunity to accumulate. With 25bb, the effective stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) on a single raise is often around 6-8, allowing for some post-flop maneuverability but limiting speculative play.

Range Construction

A typical HJ defense range against a standard raise (e.g., 2.5bb) from UTG or UTG+1 might include:

• 3-bet all-in: Hands like TT+, AJ+ are often pushed profitably, as they have equity against early position ranges and fold equity against weaker hands.
• 3-bet (non-all-in): Usually avoided with 25bb because a standard 3-bet commits a large portion of stack, leaving awkward post-flop. However, some players use medium 3-bets with hands like AQ or KQs to induce folds.
• Call: Hands like small pairs, suited connectors (76s+, 65s, etc.), and some broadways (KQ, AT, etc.) can be called to see a flop, provided the opponent's range is sufficiently wide and the implied odds are favorable.
• Fold: Weak hands, dominated aces (A9, A8), and low offsuit cards are folded, as playing them out of position with shallow stacks is -EV.

ICM Implications

In tournaments, the Independent Chip Model (ICM) becomes important with 25bb, especially near the money or final table. The HJ should tighten its defense range if opponents are loose or if there are short stacks at the table. Survival value increases, so marginal hands lose appeal.

Example Scenario

Blinds 500/1000, ante 100, effective stacks 25,000 (25bb). HJ faces a raise to 2,500 from UTG. Holding A♠T♠, the HJ can consider calling if UTG's range includes many offsuit broadways, but folding against a tight UTG range. With 77, calling is often fine to set-mine, but the 25bb stack means hitting a set is less profitable due to low implied odds. All-in 3-bets with 77 are usually too thin.
