HJ 25bb Resteal

HJ 25bb Resteal

Term: HJ 25bb Resteal A strategy where, when holding approximately 25 big blinds in the Hijack HJ, you 3-bet resteal against a blind steal raise from a later position CO or BTN.

Concept

HJ 25bb Resteal refers to a scenario in no-limit hold'em tournaments where a player in the HJ position (Hijack, i.e., UTG+2) with approximately 25 big blinds (BB) chooses to 3bet as a resteal against a blind steal raise from the CO (Cutoff) or BTN (Button). At this stack depth, the HJ's chip count is in the "medium" range, allowing pressure on opponents while retaining some post-flop maneuverability.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Opponent's range is wide: When the CO or BTN has a high steal frequency (e.g., >40%) and a high fold-to-3bet rate, a resteal is profitable.
  • Balancing your own range: The HJ's 3bet range should include value hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and bluffs (e.g., some suited connectors, small Ax) to balance the strategy.
  • Stack depth: Around 20-30BB is the "sweet spot" for resteals; below 15BB, a direct shove is usually better; above 35BB, post-flop pressure increases.

Execution Points

  • Bet sizing: Typically 3bet to about 6-7BB (roughly 2.5-3x the opponent's raise), not giving them favorable pot odds while avoiding pot commitment issues.
  • Fold decisions: If facing a 4bet, decide whether to call or fold based on opponent tendencies and pot odds; if the opponent calls, continue betting based on the flop texture.
  • Adjustment factors: Consider the opponent's 4bet frequency, post-flop play, and tournament stage (ICM pressure).

Example

(Example scenario) In a tournament with blinds 500/1000 and a 100 ante, the HJ holds 25,000 chips (25BB). The CO opens to 2,200, the button folds. The HJ has A♠9♠, judges the CO to be stealing frequently, and chooses to 3bet to 6,500. If the CO folds, the HJ wins the pot; if the CO calls, the HJ can continue aggression post-flop with draws or overcards.

Advantages and Risks

  • Advantages: Leverages positional and stack advantages to punish stealers and accumulate chips.
  • Risks: If the opponent 4bets or calls and plays post-flop, the HJ may end up in a disadvantageous spot; opponent selection is crucial.
