HJ 50bb Defense
HJ 50bb Defense
When you have about 50 big blinds effective stack in the Hijack HJ position, the defensive strategy to take when facing a raise from another player.
Position and Stack Depth
HJ stands for Hijack, the position two seats after the UTG (under the gun). It is generally considered a relatively early position but still one with a decent range. 50bb represents an effective stack of approximately 50 big blinds, which is a medium depth common in cash games or mid-tournament stages.
Key Defense Strategy
When a player in HJ with 50bb faces a raise from an early or middle position, the defense range typically includes:
- High-quality hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) often choose to 3-bet or call.
- Medium pairs and suited connectors may consider calling, using positional advantage to operate post-flop.
- Avoid defending with too weak hands, as HJ is in the middle and still has CO and BTN behind who might squeeze.
Post-Flop Play
50bb stack depth allows for more post-flop maneuvers such as floating and semi-bluff raises. However, be careful to control the pot and avoid getting committed in large pots. When defending, consider the opponent's range, especially against opens from UTG or MP, as their ranges are stronger.
Example
Suppose HJ holds 50bb, an early position player opens to 3bb, and HJ calls with 88. The flop comes 7-5-2, and the early position player c-bets 4bb. HJ can raise or call, depending on the opponent's tendencies.
Notes
- Stack depth affects the defense range; at 50bb, defense should not be too wide, or you risk being exploited.
- Position advantage: HJ has position over early positions post-flop, but being in the middle means you must watch out for actions from later players.
