MP 100bb Bubble Play

Refers to the special strategy adjustments made during the tournament bubble phase when a player is in middle position MP with a stack of approximately 100 big blinds, based on ICM pressure.

Concept

MP 100bb Bubble Play is a typical scenario during the bubble phase of a tournament. The bubble refers to the stage closest to the money where a batch of players is about to be eliminated, and the pressure of the pay jump is greatest for the remaining players. Middle Position (MP) usually refers to UTG+1 at a 6-max table or UTG+2 at a 9-max table, with a relatively early action order. 100bb (big blind) is a deep stack, offering significant post-flop maneuverability but also facing the risk of being pressured by short-stacked players' all-ins.

Strategy Adjustments

During the bubble, ICM (Independent Chip Model) significantly influences decisions. Players should not solely pursue cEV (chip expected value) but prioritize survival probability on the money bubble edge. Specific adjustments include:

  • Tighten opening range: MP's opening range at 100bb should be tighter than in normal stages, avoiding marginal hands that could be 3-bet or shoved by later positions. Typically, only open strong hands like AJ+, 77+.
  • Against short-stack all-ins: When a short stack (e.g., 10-20bb) from early or late position shoves, use a tighter calling range to avoid elimination by calling with marginal hands. If ICM calculations show a negative $EV for a call, fold even if cEV is positive.
  • Avoid large pot risks: Deep stacks should avoid excessive confrontation, especially post-flop. Pot control and folding marginal draws are common.
  • Leverage chip advantage for pressure: But be cautious, avoid re-raises that could put your stack in danger.

Example

Assume 9 players remain, and the top 8 enter the money. You hold A♠Q♠ in MP with a 100bb stack. CO is a short stack (15bb) and shoves, and the button (deep stack) calls. Your call has high equity, but if you bust, you lose all money line value. Typical ICM calculations would recommend folding unless you assess the opponent's range as very weak.

Notes

Different tournament structures, blind levels, and opponent types affect the strategy. This play is applicable to standard 9-max or 6-max MTTs, not for C4 formats or turbo tournaments.
