It applies when a player in middle position (MP) has around 10 big blinds (bb), a critical stack size where standard pre-flop raises become inefficient because they commit a large portion of the stack and leave awkward post-flop decisions. The strategy simplifies decision-making into binary actions: either push (all-in) or fold.

Why 10bb?

At 10bb, the stack-to-pot ratio is low. A standard raise to 2.5bb would leave only 7.5bb behind, making it difficult to fold to a re-raise or play a flop profitably. By pushing, the player maximizes fold equity (the chance opponents fold) and avoids tough post-flop spots. The strategy is derived from independent chip model (ICM) considerations in tournaments, though it is also used in cash games with deep stacks if effective stacks are short.

Hand Selection

Typical pushing ranges at 10bb from MP vary based on opponents and tournament phase. A common example range includes:

• Push: Any pair, any ace, Kx suited/offsuited, Q9s+, JTs, T9s, and some suited connectors like 98s. Offsuit broadways like KJo, QTo are often pushes.
• Fold: Weak offsuit hands like Q8o, J9o, unsuited low cards, and small suited connectors like 65s (though some include them).

This range is tighter than the button or cutoff because MP has more players left to act, increasing the risk of being called by a strong hand.

Adjustments

• Tight players: Push wider if opponents fold too much.
• Loose callers: Tighten range to hands with good equity when called.
• ICM pressure: Near the bubble or pay jumps, tighten pushing range and call range to preserve tournament life.
