MP 30bb Steal

Concept

MP (Middle Position) is the 3rd-5th seat in a 9-handed table (immediately after under the gun). 30bb is a common stack depth. MP 30bb Steal is a preflop aggressive strategy that leverages position and stack advantage to force the blinds to fold with a certain range of raises, thus winning the dead money (blinds) without seeing a flop.

Principles

• Position Advantage: MP acts relatively early preflop but is in middle position postflop, still retaining some control.
• Stack Depth: 30bb is a medium stack with sufficient fold equity and manageable risk.
• Blind Ranges: Blind players typically have wider defending ranges, but fold equity against an MP raise, especially with short stacks, is still high.

Raising Range

Generally, MP 30bb steal opening range is tighter than BTN (button) but wider than UTG. Example range (adjust based on opponents):

• Value hands: 77+, AT+, KJ+, QJ+, etc.
• Steal hands: low pairs (22-66), Axs (suited ace with small kicker), suited connectors (56s-9Ts), etc.

Adjustment Factors

• Opponent Tendencies: If blinds call or 3-bet frequently (loose-aggressive), tighten the steal range; if blinds are too tight, widen the range.
• Position: MP steal is riskier than CO (cutoff) and BTN because later players (CO, BTN) can re-steal.
• Pot Odds: Calculate whether opponent fold equity is sufficient for profit. For example, a standard 2.5bb steal raise requires roughly 40% fold equity to be profitable.

• Risks: After being 3-bet, 30bb stack makes it difficult to re-raise or call effectively, often leading to a dilemma of folding or shoving.
