SB 20bb Open Jam

SB 20bb Open Jam

A poker strategy where a player in the small blind with approximately 20 big blinds moves all-in preflop instead of making a smaller raise.

Overview

The SB 20bb Open Jam is a common preflop strategy used in no-limit hold'em tournaments and sit-n-gos when the effective stack size is around 20 big blinds. The player in the small blind (SB) chooses to open-shove (jam) rather than raise to 2-2.5x. This move is typically part of a balanced or exploitative strategy based on stack depth, opponent tendencies, and tournament factors like ICM.

Strategic Rationale

When the stack is between 15-25bb, the small blind is in a difficult position postflop. A standard raise leaves the SB playing out of position with a shallow stack-to-pot ratio, making it hard to realize equity and apply pressure. By open-jamming, the SB removes postflop play entirely, forces opponents to a decision for their entire stack, and maximizes fold equity. This is especially effective against tight big blind (BB) opponents who overfold to shoves.

From a game theory optimal (GTO) perspective, the SB should shove a polarized range of strong hands and weak suited connectors/aces at a certain frequency. For example, with 20bb, typical GTO ranges might include hands like AJo+, KQo, A2s-A5s, small pocket pairs, and suited connectors. The exact range adjusts based on the BB's calling tendencies.

ICM Considerations

In tournaments, the Independent Chip Model (ICM) affects the profitability of open-jamming. Near the bubble or with pay jumps, the SB should tighten their shoving range because the BB's calling range also tightens. Conversely, when short-stacked and in desperate need of chips, the open-jam range widens.

Exploitative Adjustments

  • Against a passive BB who folds too often: Widen the jamming range, including weaker holdings like K9o or QJo.
  • Against a station who calls wide: Narrow to premium hands only (TT+, AQ+).
  • Against a BB who 3-bets light over small opens: Jamming removes that option and forces a direct confrontation.

Drawbacks

Open-jamming with 20bb can be suboptimal in certain situations:

  • When the BB is very deep and prone to calling light.
  • When other opponents (e.g., in the cutoff or button) have already folded but may overcall with strong hands.
  • In cash games where stack sizes are deeper and postflop skill gives an edge.

Example Situation

In a tournament with blinds 500/1000, the SB has 20,000 chips. Action folds to the SB. If the SB open-jams, the BB faces a decision for 20bb. The SB's range should be constructed to exploit the BB's likely calling range. A typical tight calling range might be 66+, AT+, KQ, giving the SB profit with a wider shoving range.
