UTG 100bb Bubble Play

Strategies and decision principles when UTG under the gun holds about 100 big blinds stack depth during the tournament bubble phase.

Meaning

UTG 100bb Bubble Play refers to the strategy in Texas Hold'em tournaments when the remaining players are close to the money (the bubble period) and you are in the under-the-gun position (UTG) with a stack depth of approximately 100 big blinds (bb). At this stage, ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure increases significantly, and entering pots recklessly can lead to elimination risk far outweighing potential gains.

Strategic Key Points

  • Tighten Opening Range: As UTG is the worst position, you should significantly tighten your starting hand range during the bubble. Usually, only play top pocket pairs (e.g., TT+), strong high cards (AK, AQ), and some suited connectors (e.g., AJs, KQs). Avoid risking with small pairs or suited connectors.
  • Facing a Re-raise: If you get 3-bet, carefully evaluate your opponent's range. Due to ICM pressure, an opponent's 3-bet often represents very strong hands. While 100bb depth provides some room to maneuver, during the bubble you should prioritize protecting your stack; consider folding to avoid getting involved in a large pot.
  • Stealing and Defense: Other players will also tighten up during the bubble, so theoretically your UTG steal success rate increases. However, you must still consider possible squeeze plays from players behind you. 100bb depth allows post-flop maneuvering, but if you face resistance pre-flop, you should abandon marginal hands.
  • Post-Flop Strategy: If you reach a flop, adopt a conservative line. In multiway pots, bet cautiously and avoid bluffing. Unless you hit a strong hand, keep the pot small.

Typical Scenario Example

Assume there are 30 players remaining, with the top 27 cashing. You hold ATo (offsuit) in UTG with 100bb. Folding is a common choice here, because ATo is weak in the UTG range and may be dominated by AJ+ or pocket pairs. If you hold AK, you can consider raising to 2.2-2.5bb, but if you face an all-in, you need to consider whether the opponent's range includes AA/KK.

Notes

  • Do not ignore ICM during the bubble stage, but 100bb depth provides a buffer, so there is no need for excessive panic.
  • Observe opponent styles: Tight-passive players can be exploited for steals; loose-aggressive players require a more conservative approach.
  • Avoid conflicts with players who have similar stack sizes; prioritize attacking short stacks.
