UTG 20bb Push Fold

UTG 20bb Push Fold

A preflop strategy where the player under the gun (UTG) with a stack of approximately 20 big blinds either moves all-in or folds, avoiding any intermediate raises or calls.

Overview

UTG 20bb Push Fold refers to a simplified preflop strategy used primarily in tournament poker when a player is under the gun (first to act) and has a stack of about 20 big blinds (bb). At this stack depth, the standard raise-to-2.5bb or 3bb becomes awkward because calling a re-raise or facing a jam can commit a large portion of the stack. The push-or-fold approach avoids difficult postflop decisions and capitalizes on fold equity.

Why 20bb?

At exactly 20bb, a min-raise (2bb) leaves 18bb behind. If an opponent 3-bets to say 5bb, the UTG player would need to consider shoving or folding, but calling leaves a low stack-to-pot ratio. Push-or-fold simplifies this: any hand strong enough to raise is strong enough to shove, and weaker hands are folded. This range is typically tighter than an opening range at deeper stacks, but looser than a push range from earlier positions (e.g., UTG with 10bb).

Typical Ranges

An example push range for UTG with 20bb (9-handed) might include:

This range is roughly 12-15% of hands. Fold weaker offsuit aces (A2o-A9o), small pairs (22-55 for the tightest), and weak suited aces (A2s-A5s are sometimes shoves but often folds depending on opponents).

Strategic Considerations

  • Position: UTG is the worst position postflop, so shoving ensures you see all five cards and never face a re-raise.
  • Opponent tendencies: If players call too loosely, tighten the shoving range; if they fold too often, loosen it.
  • ICM pressure: In tournaments nearing the money or with pay jumps, the push range may tighten because busting is costly.
  • Blind sizes: With antes, a 20bb stack has less effective leverage; the shove is more profitable because the pot is larger.

Limitations

Push-or-fold is a simplification. Advanced players may sometimes raise to 2.2bb or 2.5bb with a balanced range to induce action or disguise hand strength. However, for learning or when unsure, the UTG 20bb push/fold model provides a solid default strategy.
