UTG 25bb Resteal

UTG 25bb Resteal

In Texas Hold'em, refers to the strategy where a player in UTG under the gun position, with an effective stack of about 25 big blinds, re-raises or goes all-in against a steal raise from a later position player.

Concept Explanation

UTG 25bb Resteal is a specific restealing strategy for a certain stack depth. UTG (Under the Gun) is the first position to act preflop, typically with a tight range. When the UTG player has a stack depth around 25 big blinds, it is a medium stack stage. At this point, later position players (e.g., the button) may attempt to steal blinds with a wider range. Resteal refers to countering the stealer by raising or shoving, forcing them to fold or call while behind.

Strategy Points

  • Opponent Tendencies: This strategy is applicable when the late-position player has a high steal frequency. Observe the opponent's stealing range and fold-to-3bet percentage.
  • Example: UTG holds A9o with effective stack of 25bb. The button raises to 2.5bb. UTG can shove all-in for 25bb, using stack pressure to force the button to fold most weak hands.
  • Range Selection: Typically choose hands with blocking effects (e.g., A, K) or suited connectors that have playability postflop. Avoid restealing with weak hands because UTG's raise appears stronger.
  • Risk: If the opponent's calling range is strong (e.g., big pairs, strong Aces), UTG's resteal may be at a disadvantage. Need to calculate expected value based on pot odds and opponent's range.

Notes

This strategy is not applicable in all situations. If the opponent is a tight-aggressive player, or the late-position raising range is very strong, proceed with caution. Additionally, ICM factors are especially important in tournaments, and survival value must be considered.
