BB 20bb Bubble Play

Overview

BB 20bb Bubble Play is a specific strategy for players in the Big Blind position holding about 20 big blinds during the bubble phase of a tournament. Due to bubble pressure (approaching the money), players' decisions are influenced by ICM (Independent Chip Model), and standard GTO strategies need adjustment.

Key Influencing Factors

  • Bubble Pressure: One player is about to be eliminated, and the remaining players will enter the money. Short stacks tend to be conservative, while big stacks may exploit this pressure to be aggressive.
  • 20bb Stack: This depth is considered medium. The big blind still has room to maneuver but cannot afford multiple all-ins.
  • Position: The big blind is the last to act, enjoying informational advantage preflop but the worst position postflop.

Common Strategy Points

Preflop

  • Against a Small Blind Raise: Usually can call or raise, but consider the small blind's stack size and aggression. If the small blind is short (10-15bb), consider shoving with strong hands to apply pressure.
  • Against Steals: If early-position players frequently steal blinds, use an appropriate range (e.g., suited connectors, medium pairs) to raise or call, avoiding frequent exploitation.

Postflop

  • Flop: If you call and enter the pot, play cautiously postflop. With 20bb, you can make continuation bets or bluffs, but be mindful of pot control to avoid getting committed.
  • Turn and River: With marginal hands, consider check-folding; with strong hands, bet aggressively.

Typical Example

Assume blinds 500/1000, ante 100, big blind has 20,000 chips, small blind has 15,000 chips. Small blind shoves all-in, big blind holds A9o. Due to bubble pressure, the small blind's shoving range is usually tight (e.g., TT+, AJ+). Calling here may be -EV, so consider folding.

Notes

  • Bubble play requires dynamic adjustment based on opponent tendencies, your own chip rank, etc.
  • Avoid confronting big stacks with marginal hands during the bubble to prevent early elimination.
  • If your stack is close to 20bb and the bubble is near, consider tightening your range and wait for better opportunities.
