HJ 30bb Resteal
HJ 30bb Resteal
Strategy of using a 30 big blind stack depth to 3-bet resteal from the hijack HJ position when facing blind steals from later positions.
Overview
HJ 30bb Resteal is a counter-strategy in Texas Hold'em aimed at combating late-position Steal attempts. It applies when the player is in the Hijack position (Hijack, abbreviated as HJ) with an effective stack depth of approximately 30 big blinds (BB). The core of this strategy leverages the positional advantage of HJ and the moderate stack depth to deny the stealer's expected profit through a 3-bet (a reraise).
Strategy Principles
- Position & Range: HJ is a middle-to-late position that sees the folds from early and middle positions while still having CO, BTN, and other late-position players behind. When the HJ player holds 30bb, their range can be moderately widened to include medium pairs, suited connectors, Axs, etc. These hands offer playability post-flop and are suitable for all-ins or preflop pushes.
- Stealer Analysis: Late-position stealers (especially BTN and CO) typically have wide ranges including weak Aces, weak Kings, suited connectors, and more. At 30bb depth, the stealer's fold rate to a 3-bet is high because the restealer has enough chips to apply pressure.
- Mathematical Expectation: At 30bb, the 3-bet sizing is usually 7-9bb. A successful steal of the pot (dead money + stealer's bet) yields an immediate profit of about 4.5-5.5bb. If called, HJ's hand types still perform well post-flop, as the shallow stack depth reduces technical disadvantages.
Key Factors
- Opponent Tendencies: This strategy works best against opponents who steal frequently or fold too often. If an opponent's 3-bet calling range is too wide, the resteal becomes riskier.
- Pot Odds: At 30bb depth, HJ's 3-bet needs the stealer to fold at least approximately 55-65% to be immediately profitable (depending on dead money and raise size).
- Post-flop Play: If called, a continuation bet (c-bet) of about 1/3 to 1/2 the pot should be made post-flop, using the remaining chips to exert pressure.
Summary
HJ 30bb Resteal is a common profitable maneuver in both tournaments and cash games, but it requires flexible adjustments based on opponents and dynamics. Overusing it can lead to counter-adjustments, so it is recommended to balance this with preflop range considerations.
