Middle Position 25bb Final Table

Overview

MP 25bb Final Table is a common strategic scenario in the late stages of a tournament. The player is in middle position (usually UTG+1 at a 6-handed table or the 4th/5th seat at a 9-handed table), with a stack depth of about 25 big blinds, considered a medium-shallow stack. At this point, the final table has few remaining players (typically 6-9), ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure is significant, blind levels are high, and players tend to play more cautiously.

Key Strategy Points

  • Hand Selection: Recommended opening range is about 15%-20% of hands, mainly including medium-high pairs (77+), two high cards (AQ+), and suited connectors (e.g., JTs). Avoid getting involved in large pots with marginal hands.
  • Responding to Raises: If a player before you raises, consider shoving or re-raising with TT+, AJ+, etc. Against a raise from later position, you can widen your range slightly.
  • Defending Blinds: When in the big blind facing a raise from early position, defend by calling with about 25%-30% of hands, but avoid calling all-ins with weak hands.
  • ICM Considerations: At the final table, survival value outweighs accumulating chips, so try to avoid confrontations with deep-stacked players and focus on putting pressure on short stacks.
  • Position Advantage: Middle position allows you to judge later positions reasonably well, but it is less flexible than late position. Thus, balance your shoving and folding frequencies.

Common Mistakes

  • Playing too tight and folding medium-strength hands, resulting in blind erosion.
  • Being overly aggressive with shoves, getting called by deep stacks and eliminated.
  • Ignoring ICM pressure and risking marginal hands near the bubble.

Typical Example

Assume the final table has 8 players remaining, blinds are 10k/20k, ante 2k, and you have 500k chips (25bb) in MP. Everyone folds to you. With 99, you could raise to 45k. If a short stack in late position shoves, you can consider calling. With ATo, you can fold to avoid being dominated by AQs or big pairs.
