HJ 3Bet
HJ 3Bet
Term: HJ 3Bet The action of a hijack HJ player re-raising an early position raise.
Definition
HJ 3Bet refers to the action in Texas Hold'em where a player in the Hijack (HJ) position re-raises (i.e., makes the third bet) after an earlier position player (e.g., UTG, UTG+1, etc.) has opened with a raise. The HJ is the position after UTG and before the Cutoff (CO). It is generally a middle-to-late position with some positional advantage, though less than CO and BTN.
Purpose and Strategy
- Value Raise: Leveraging the positional advantage of HJ, use strong hands (e.g., AA, KK, AK) to 3Bet the initial raiser, aiming to build the pot and isolate the opponent, while forcing weaker hands to fold.
- Bluff Raise: In specific situations (e.g., when the early-position raiser has a wide range or a high fold-to-3bet rate), HJ may 3Bet bluff with medium-strength or playable hands (e.g., A5s, KQo, small-to-medium pairs), using post-flop positional advantage to win the pot.
- Range Balancing: To avoid being easily read, HJ's 3Bet range should include both value and bluff components, with the ratio adjusted based on opponent tendencies and stack depth. Generally, in a game without antes, HJ's 3Bet frequency against an UTG raise is around 6-9%.
Considerations
- Position: After HJ 3Bets, post-flop position is still disadvantageous relative to CO and BTN. Therefore, the 3Bet range should be tighter than that from the button, and post-flop play requires caution.
- Opponent Tendencies: If the early-position raiser has a tight range and low fold-to-3bet, reduce bluff 3bets; conversely, increase them if the raiser is loose or folds often.
- Stack Depth: With deep effective stacks (e.g., >100BB), favor hands with high playability for 3betting; with shallow stacks (<40BB), focus on value 3bets.
- Table Dynamics: If the table is generally aggressive, tighten the 3Bet range; if passive, use position to isolate more frequently.
Typical Examples
- Effective stacks 100BB, HJ holds AKs, UTG raises to 3BB. HJ can 3Bet to 9-11BB, both extracting value and isolating UTG.
- HJ holds 77, UTG raises to 3BB, UTG+1 calls. HJ may consider a 3Bet bluff, forcing UTG+1 to fold and going heads-up against UTG with post-flop positional advantage.
Note: The above are theoretical principles; specific strategies should be adjusted based on actual conditions.
