HJ 3Bet

Overview

The Hijack (HJ) is the seat immediately to the right of the Cutoff (CO) and two seats to the right of the Button. It is considered a middle-to-late position in 6-max games and a late-middle position in full-ring games. An HJ 3Bet is a re-raise made by a player in that seat after an opponent has opened the betting (a raise). The term is commonly used in No-Limit Hold'em and other flop games.

Strategic Significance

The HJ 3Bet is a powerful tool for building pots, isolating weaker opponents, and balancing ranges. Positional Factors

The HJ 3Bet puts pressure on the original raiser, who must then act first on later streets if they call. However, the HJ will still be out of position against the CO and Button if those players enter the pot. Therefore, sizing is often larger (e.g., 3.5x the open raise) to discourage multi-way pots and to deny equity to hands that might call with decent implied odds.

Example Scenario

In a 6-max cash game with 100bb effective stacks, an UTG player opens to 3bb. The HJ holds A♠K♥. A typical HJ 3Bet would be to 11–12bb. If UTG folds, HJ wins the pot uncontested. If UTG calls, the HJ will have a strong range advantage and can c-bet on many flops.

Adjustments Based on Game Type

• Tournaments (ICM): HJ 3-betting ranges tighten near the bubble or in short-stacked situations due to increased risk of elimination. Stealing blinds becomes less important than survival.
• Cash Games: Players can 3-bet more liberally if opponents fold too often to 3-bets (exploitative strategy) or tighten up if opponents 4-bet aggressively.

Common Mistakes

• 3-betting too wide against tight raisers, leading to frequent 4-bets or calls that put the HJ in tough postflop spots.
